From Finland to the Athenian Riviera

Some couples cross a whole continent to say their vows. Kati and Juha flew in from Finland to marry at the water’s edge on the Athenian Riviera – and they asked me to hold on to the day the way only paint can: live, while it was still happening, in front of everyone they love.

They chose Island, the celebrated venue set above the sea on the Athens Riviera, where the Aegean does most of the decorating. With the water stretching out behind them and the summer light softening everything it touched, it was the kind of setting a painter dreams about – and the perfect stage for a destination wedding far from the Finnish winter they’d left behind.

I painted that one unique moment of theirs live, in front of everyone. The reactions and the feelings – that’s the part that stays in everyone’s memory forever.

A Palette of Flowers and Sea

Kati loves flowers. So when the blooms she’d chosen met the deep blue of the sea and the setting the couple had styled for our reference photograph, the painting almost composed itself: blossoms in the foreground, Aegean blue behind, and the two of them held right in the middle of it. It gave the canvas a character that was entirely theirs – full of colour and light, and made to keep them company for a lifetime.

One Painting Became Two

Kati was so moved by the finished piece that she asked me for a second one – a bridal canvas, this time as a secret gift for her parents. There’s something quietly wonderful about a painting given in secret, from the heart, and I loved bringing this one to life just as much as the first.
